Natalie Williams • Being the One Who Listens
(Medical Student, Harvard University || MA USA)
“I want to pursue neurosurgery because I think it’s important to have representation. It’s validating for me to know I’m capable of being the surgeon, or the attending doctor, or the lead researcher. It’s important to have confidence.

My sisters are also both in STEM careers. My twin sister Olivia is a biochemical engineer working with a biotech startup, and my younger sister Courtney is starting dental school in the fall. My parents encouraged all of us — ‘study now, you’ll have time for boys later.’ I always told myself I wanted to be a neurosurgeon, and I strongly believe I’m still on that path. But having the opportunity to work with women during my OBGYN rotation opened my eyes to the impact I can have on a specific population — hearing women’s stories, and being the person who listens. As a patient, you need to see people who are going to share some type of experience with you.”
